「I have been here for about one month. I go to a local Christian school called Sacred Heart Girls’ College. The style of this school is very different from Doshisha Girls’. There are no typical classes like we have in Japan. At this school,  there is something called CCM. CCM is like a Japanese homeroom class, but it is different. There are 10 to 20 students from various grade levels in each CCM. Students chat casually with each other, regardless of their grade. It is very interesting for me. I think English doesn’t have a strict honorific system like Japanese, so people can become friends regardless of their age in New Zealand. In fact, I have seen teachers and students making TikTok videos together. Anyway, the distance between people feels very close in New Zealand.
The classes at this school are very different as well. They focus on active learning, and students talk with teachers a lot. I think this environment helps students become independent learners. I also signed up for some clubs. I joined the Barbershop chorus. Barbershop is a style of choral singing. The Barbershop chorus at this school is huge and very strong. I really enjoy singing. I still don’t fully understand everything people say, but I can get the gist, so I don’t have much trouble at school.
My host family is very kind and friendly. They take me to many places. I went to Cambridge, which is one of the cities in New Zealand. They are Vietnamese, so I am learning some Vietnamese culture and language. I celebrated Lunar New Year with them. They are also learning about Japanese culture from me. They ask me a lot of questions about Japan, which makes me very happy. I made some Japanese food for them, such as Japanese Dumplings and Udon. We have a lot of conversations, so my English skills are getting better and better. Recently, I have really been enjoying talking in English. I would like to enjoy my remaining month in New Zealand even more.」
