「I have been in New Zealand for two weeks. I go to a language school called WIE, where I study only English. Teachers only speak in English, too. Sometimes, I can’t understand them because they speak too fast and use difficult words. In addition, their English is British English. In Japan, we usually learn American English at school, but in New Zealand, people speak British English. I was surprised because their English is very different from the English I had learned before, but it is also interesting. It was hard at first, but I can usually understand them now. There are students from many countries at the language school. I made friends with people from China, Korea, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. All of them are older than me, but they are very kind. Although my English isn’t perfect, I enjoy communicating with them.
On Friday during the first week, I experienced “Shared Lunch” at the language school. “Shared Lunch” is an event where students bring food from their own cultures. I enjoyed card games, board games, and having lunch with my friends. We played Babanuki. One of my friends and I knew it, but other friends didn’t know it at first. However, as they played it, they understood the rules. Somehow, the joker always followed me, so we were always laughing.
I stay in New Zealand with a host family. My host is an elderly woman. She is very friendly and kind. She has taken me to Raglan Beach, Hamilton Lake, and a shopping mall on weekends. They were a lot of fun! I will stay with another host family soon because I have to go to another school in New Zealand. I’m very sad I have to say goodbye soon. However, I’m also excited to meet a new host family. I’ll do my best to grow even more during my last two months in New Zealand.」
